Sam Kerr Reveals Fiance Kristie Mewis’ Harsh Message During Her Toughest Time at Chelsea

“How lucky are we…” Kristie Mewis captioned a recent Instagram post, where she shared pictures with her fiancée, Sam Kerr. Since getting together in 2020, their relationship has only grown, with Mewis even embracing a stepmom role today. But while their bond is full of love, it also comes with plenty of banter — some playful, some stinging. And in Kerr’s toughest spell at Chelsea, Mewis delivered a message that Kerr would never forget.

For USWNT fans, the couple’s cheeky digs are nothing new. Back in 2023, Kerr teased Mewis about Gotham FC’s poor defending, joking about how many goals they had conceded from corners. But as Kerr recently revealed on The Women’s Game podcast, hosted by Kristie’s sister Sam Mewis, Kristie can be even harsher behind the scenes.

Kerr recalled a rough moment at Chelsea when she felt crushed by criticism, with people calling her “overrated” and “a waste of money.” After one game where she missed seven one-on-one chances despite Chelsea’s win, Kerr checked her phone expecting comfort. Instead, Kristie had texted: “You’re meant to kick it in the net.”

Kerr laughed as she told the story, admitting her first thought was, “I don’t know if I like this girl anymore.” The blunt message stunned Sam Mewis, but she quickly defended her sister, explaining Kristie is known for her “tough love.”

Kerr agreed, saying that’s simply how Kristie connects with people — she mixes support with banter. In fact, Kerr admitted she’s dished out her own critiques before, like pointing out when Mewis could have defended better at the front post. Their relationship thrives on that mix of honesty, competition, and support.

As Kerr once said in Netflix’s Under Pressure documentary, “We’re both so supportive of each other but also so hard on each other.” For the couple, tough love isn’t just criticism — it’s part of what drives them both forward.
