‘I’ll play him for any amount he wants’ – Tour veteran issues bold challenge to Jordan Spieth after new PGA event sparks backlash

The PGA Tour’s announcement of another signature event for the 2026 season has caused quite a stir among players — and veteran pro Robert Garrigus isn’t holding back.

With next year’s total number of signature tournaments now reaching nine, Garrigus voiced his frustration over what he sees as favoritism toward certain big names — and Jordan Spieth found himself in the firing line.

According to Golfweek’s Adam Schupak, the outspoken Garrigus interrupted a conversation between Schupak and fellow pro James Hahn to vent his anger. “What is happening to our Tour?” Garrigus reportedly exclaimed before taking a jab at Spieth.

“So, does that mean one more sponsor invite for Jordan Spieth?” he said. “Tell Spieth I’ll play him for any amount he wants. If I win, I get his five invites to the signature events.”

Garrigus, a one-time PGA Tour winner whose only victory dates back to 2010, has made just a single Tour appearance in 2025.

Meanwhile, Spieth’s disappointing finish outside the top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings means he’ll now need sponsor exemptions to compete in those high-profile tournaments next season. Rickie Fowler faced a similar situation in 2025 but still managed to secure invites to six of the eight signature events that year.

The fiery comments highlight growing tension among Tour pros over the increasing exclusivity of signature events — and Garrigus’s challenge has certainly added fuel to that debate.
