Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis are officially tying the knot today, and while the Matildas captain has plenty to be excited about, there’s one wedding buzzword she’s more than ready to retire.

Ahead of their New Year’s Eve ceremony, Kerr shared a light-hearted post on Instagram showing herself and Mewis training at the gym. Alongside the photo, she joked that it was the “last day” she’d ever have to hear about the dreaded “wedding shred.”

The football stars will exchange vows in Perth, Kerr’s hometown, marking a special milestone for the couple who announced their engagement back in 2023. The wedding comes just seven months after they welcomed their first child, son Jagger, in May.

Mewis also shared her excitement online, posting a series of behind-the-scenes photos as final preparations were underway, simply captioned: “Tomorrow.”

Speaking recently on her sister Sam Mewis’ podcast The Women’s Game, Kristie revealed the ceremony will be held at a private home with around 120 guests, many of whom are expected to be Kerr’s Matildas teammates. While she admitted it’s not huge by some standards, the number still feels overwhelming.

“The idea of talking to 120 people in one night is a lot,” she said, explaining that her biggest worry is not being able to spend enough time with everyone.

Because the wedding falls on New Year’s Eve, the couple decided to push the ceremony later into the day so they can celebrate the countdown together with their guests. Mewis also confessed she’s slightly anxious about the heat, with Perth in the middle of summer.

Although baby Jagger is too young to take part in the ceremony, Kerr will walk him down the aisle — a moment Mewis admitted will likely leave her in tears.

The newlyweds won’t be heading off on a honeymoon straight away due to football commitments, though they have discussed possibly attending the men’s World Cup later on.

Kerr previously spoke about the wedding on the Mewis Squared podcast, joking about whether her fiancée had turned into a “bridezilla.” While she said Mewis’ attention to detail comes from a good place, Kerr reminded her that it’s impossible to make the day perfect for everyone.

Despite the nerves and planning stress, Kerr said she’s most looking forward to celebrating with their loved ones — suited up, a few drinks in, and ringing in the New Year together.
