Matildas interim coach Tom Sermanni has dismissed speculation regarding Sam Kerr’s captaincy, calling it “irrelevant” given her ongoing injury and his temporary role. While Football Australia has publicly supported Kerr, no formal discussions have taken place about her leadership position within the team.
Sermanni emphasized that his primary focus is Kerr’s recovery and the team’s preparations for upcoming matches. He noted that Steph Catley has stepped in effectively as captain and that the squad remains concentrated on competitions like the SheBelieves Cup and the 2026 campaign.
Despite media scrutiny, Sermanni reiterated that Kerr’s captaincy is not a current concern, as she has been sidelined for over a year. He acknowledged that if she returns under his tenure, discussions may occur, but for now, the team is focused on their immediate goals.
