Tennis legend Serena Williams has joined the WNBA expansion franchise Toronto Tempo as a minority owner. The team, set to debut in 2026, announced Williams’ involvement through a social media video, highlighting her transition from tennis to basketball ownership.
Williams will be part of an ownership group led by Toronto billionaire Larry Tanenbaum, who also has stakes in multiple sports franchises. In a statement, she expressed excitement about investing in women’s sports and building a lasting legacy with the Tempo. Her ownership stake is pending final league approval.
This marks Williams’ fourth professional sports ownership. She co-founded NWSL’s Angel City FC, holds a stake in the Miami Dolphins, and is a founding member of Los Angeles Golf Club. The Tempo, the WNBA’s 14th team and first international expansion, will launch with strong community involvement.
