Rory McIlroy aligned with Jordan Spieth on the ongoing debate surrounding the PGA Tour and LIV Golf merger, stating that the American circuit does not necessarily “need” a deal with the Saudi-backed league.
Since the PGA Tour and the Public Investment Fund (PIF) announced a tentative agreement in June 2023, negotiations have continued, but tensions remain. Despite efforts from figures like former President Donald Trump, including White House meetings with PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan, a resolution remains uncertain.
Speaking ahead of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, McIlroy reinforced his stance, suggesting that while a deal would unite golf’s top players, the PGA Tour is not reliant on PIF’s investment. His views echoed Spieth’s previous remarks at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, where Spieth asserted that the Tour does not require additional financial backing. However, McIlroy later questioned whether such comments might impact negotiations, pointing out that PIF remains a significant force in global sports investment.
McIlroy and Spieth previously discussed their differing views in a private conversation, with McIlroy raising concerns about the message sent to PIF investors. He acknowledged Spieth’s perspective but suggested that dismissing PIF’s involvement could complicate future negotiations. With billions at stake, the potential partnership remains a crucial topic, though both players agree that the PGA Tour can continue successfully on its own.
