Golf pundit details why Rory McIlroy isn’t playing the Memorial Tournament 2025

Rory McIlroy will not be participating in the 2025 Memorial Tournament, a notable absence given its status as a Signature Event. Despite being the world number two, McIlroy has chosen to lighten his schedule this season.

Signature Events are known for elite fields and large purses, typically attracting top players. However, McIlroy has now skipped three of the eight, preferring flexibility to support other tournaments and balance his commitments.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Bob Harig, McIlroy’s choices are strategic. He’s also supporting the DP World Tour and playing events like the RBC Canadian Open, which benefit more from his presence.

While his absence is surprising, Harig believes it’s justifiable. McIlroy is still adding value to the sport by boosting smaller events, even if it means missing some of the biggest ones on the calendar.
