Lexi Thompson recently shared an emotional tribute honoring Freddie, a close family friend. In a heartfelt Instagram story, she described Freddie as “an angel” and expressed her deep loss following his passing.
The tribute read: “HEAVEN GAINED AN ANGEL TODAY. FREDDIE LOVED MY FAMILY AND I AS ONE OF HIS OWN. HE’D ALWAYS SAY I WAS HIS GRANDDAUGHTER TO EVERYBODY AROUND, THE SUPPORT/CARE AND LOVE HE GAVE TO ALL OF US WAS TRULY THE BEST. I KNOW YOU’LL BE WATCHING US FROM ABOVE, CHEERING US ON IN LIFE.”
This emotional moment comes during a challenging season for Thompson. After stepping back from full-time play in 2024 due to mental health concerns, she has competed in select 2025 events. Her top finish this year was a T13 at the Founders Cup.
Despite some strong performances, she missed the cut at the 2025 U.S. Women’s Open. Her rounds of 73 and 74 at Erin Hills marked her 19th appearance in the event since her debut at age 12 in 2007.
Thompson faced criticism during the tournament over alleged slow play. Social media lit up after Charley Hull’s group appeared delayed behind Thompson’s. Fans voiced frustrations, blaming Thompson’s pace for the holdup.
Addressing the backlash, Thompson defended her play via Instagram. She stated her group “never fell behind or received warnings,” acknowledging her game wasn’t sharp but insisting pace wasn’t the issue.
She concluded by clarifying her status in golf. Though she’s scaled back her schedule and carefully selects tournaments, Thompson emphasized she has not retired. Her passion for the game, she said, still remains strong.
