Lexi Thompson endured a rough start in the third round of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, opening with a triple bogey. Battling strong winds, she topped and shanked shots on the first hole, struggling to find stability against 30 mph gusts.
After a fairway drive on the par-5 first, Thompson’s second shot traveled only 117 yards. The wind disrupted her balance, leading to a shanked third shot into thick native grass. A penalty drop and two-putt resulted in an early setback.
Her struggles continued with a bogey on the second hole. Despite entering Saturday tied for fourth following a strong 2-under 70 on Friday, Thompson found herself quickly falling behind leader Jeeno Thitikul, who began the round four shots ahead.
Though semi-retired, Thompson’s career remains impressive, boasting 13 top-five finishes in majors since 2013. Her 2014 Kraft Nabisco Championship victory remains her lone major title, but her consistent presence near the top continues to highlight her enduring competitiveness.
