Emma Raducanu rose to global stardom after making history as the first qualifier to win the US Open, doing so at just 18. She’s since become the face of British tennis, proudly crediting her parents for their support.
Born in Ontario, Canada, Raducanu moved to the UK at age two. Her father, Ian, is Romanian, and her mother, Renee, is Chinese. Both work in finance and raised Emma in Bromley, South London, where she began playing tennis at five.
Her father encouraged her to explore a wide range of interests—ballet, swimming, horse riding, golf, and even motocross. During the pandemic, he practiced tennis with her in the streets. He remains a key figure in her team decisions.
Emma often speaks of how her mixed heritage shaped her values. Her mother’s Chinese side, in particular, instilled in her a strong sense of discipline and confidence. She proudly draws strength from both her Romanian and Chinese roots.
