Andy Murray’s farewell to Wimbledon was filled with emotion on Thursday, as he took to Centre Court with his brother Jamie for what was billed as his final appearance at the All England Club.
The Murray brothers received a thunderous standing ovation when they walked onto court, before facing John Peers and Rinky Hijikata in the opening round. Among the crowd in Andy’s box were his wife Kim, his mother Judy, and his two eldest daughters, Sophia and Edie, who watched proudly from the stands.
Although the match ended in defeat, with the Australians winning 7-6(6), 6-4, the occasion was more about celebrating Murray’s legacy than the result. The three-time Grand Slam champion was honored in a touching tribute, with retired broadcaster Sue Barker returning to conduct one final on-court interview.
Past and present tennis greats including Novak Djokovic, Iga Swiatek, Martina Navratilova, and Lleyton Hewitt were also present to pay their respects. Murray, visibly emotional at times, fought back tears while thanking his wife but still managed to bring smiles with his trademark humor.
Photos captured the family’s pride, Kim cheering from the stands, and Andy’s tender moments with Jamie—including a long embrace before he left the court. He also shared warm hugs with Djokovic and others who came to honor his career.
While this was his last Wimbledon in men’s doubles, Murray isn’t quite finished yet—he is expected to partner Emma Raducanu in mixed doubles, provided his body allows.
For his family, friends, and fans, the night was not defined by the loss on the scoreboard, but by the celebration of a career that has left a lasting mark on British tennis.
