Andy Murray’s passion for golf is about to reach new heights this week as he takes part in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, teeing it up alongside members of Europe’s Ryder Cup-winning team in his home country of Scotland.
The former Wimbledon champion, who retired from tennis after the Paris 2024 Olympics, has been devoting much of his time to the sport he now calls an “obsession.” Playing in the Team Championship format, Murray will partner with a professional as he showcases his growing golfing ability in front of a supportive home crowd.
“This is really special for me,” Murray said ahead of the event. “To play in a professional tournament, and to do it here in Scotland, makes it even more meaningful. The Old Course at St Andrews feels a lot like Centre Court at Wimbledon — both have that historic atmosphere you just don’t find anywhere else.”
Since stepping away from the tennis court, Murray has thrown himself into golf with the same competitive drive that defined his playing career. He admits he spends hours practising, often arriving at the course early and staying until it’s time to pick up his children from school.
“My kids think I’m a golfer now,” he joked. “I didn’t play much for over a decade because of my back, but since retiring from tennis, it’s been fine. Golf fills that competitive void — there’s always something to improve on.”
While Murray insists he has no dreams of competing in The Open, he has set his sights on entering regional qualifiers in the future, calling it a fun challenge rather than a realistic ambition. “I know just how good the pros are,” he admitted. “Even top amateurs are a long way off the level of Tour players.”
For now, Murray is simply enjoying the thrill of competing and testing himself in front of fans once again — this time, with golf clubs instead of a racket.
