Rory McIlroy marked his long-awaited Masters victory with a memorable celebration, thanks to close friend Shane Lowry. The win completed McIlroy’s career Grand Slam, a milestone eleven years in the making and crowned by the iconic green jacket.
Determined to toast the occasion in style, Lowry approached Augusta National’s sommelier in search of the finest wine. Despite the club’s strict rules, he hoped to secure a vintage fit for McIlroy’s historic moment.
Initially denied, Lowry’s persistence prevailed, earning rare permission to purchase a case of 1990 Château Lafite Rothschild. Known for its complex flavors, the wine is considered one of the world’s most prestigious vintages.
Lowry presented the wine at McIlroy’s rental home, where they shared several glasses in celebration. With bottles fetching up to \$4,000, the gift was a luxurious tribute to a legendary achievement—and a testament to their enduring friendship.
