Jordan Spieth and his longtime caddie, Michael Greller, shared a light moment on the course during the second round of The Sentry 2024 at Kapalua Plantation Golf Course on Friday, January 5.
The friendly exchange happened on the ninth hole when Spieth hit an approach that didn’t quite cooperate, settling into a thick obstruction instead of rolling toward the cup. As the two walked up to inspect the ball — with PGA Tour microphones picking up every word — Spieth asked Greller if it was anywhere close.
Greller confidently replied yes before walking ahead, leaving Spieth to check for himself. Spotting the situation, Spieth couldn’t resist poking fun at his caddie, joking, *“I appreciate your lobbying, but that was a stretch.”*
Moments later, Spieth swapped his putter for a 3-wood to play the shot. As he lined it up, Greller chimed in again, saying he thought the ball was headed safely for the fairway. Instead, Spieth surprised everyone by pulling off a brilliant shot that resulted in a birdie — turning the banter into a memorable highlight.
Beyond the laughs, Spieth’s performance at The Sentry has been impressive. Across the first three rounds, he posted scores of 66, 67, and 67, putting him at 19-under-par — just two shots behind Saturday’s leader, Chris Kirk. His opening round featured nine birdies despite a double bogey, followed by steady six-birdie efforts in each of the next two rounds.
By the end of Saturday, Spieth sat tied for third place alongside Xander Schauffele and Byeong Hun An, firmly in contention heading into the final day.
The final round of The Sentry teed off on Sunday, January 7, with players starting from both the first and tenth holes beginning at 12:57 p.m. ET. Spieth was grouped with Byeong Hun An and Harris English, set to begin their round at 2:33 p.m. ET on the first tee.
With strong form and good spirits on display, Spieth entered the final round with momentum — and a reminder that even at the highest level, golf still has
room for humor.
