Camila Giorgi didn’t let a wardrobe controversy distract her at the French Open, as she powered her way into the fourth round in Paris.
The Italian star, ranked world No. 30, stunned seventh seed Aryna Sabalenka with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 victory — marking her first-ever appearance in the fourth round at Roland Garros.
Before the match began, Giorgi was spoken to by the umpire regarding her outfit. The official reportedly raised concerns about the size of an advertising logo on her dress. Giorgi responded, “I don’t have any change — this is my only dress. I played with it before.”
Tennis commentator José Morgado reported that the umpire allowed Giorgi to play but would “speak to the office” about the issue afterward. The logo in question was from Italian appliance company DeLonghi, prominently displayed on her chest. Giorgi had shared a locker room photo of herself wearing the outfit — tagging DeLonghi — before the match. Interestingly, she had worn a similar dress earlier in the tournament without the logo.
Elsewhere, American teenage sensation Coco Gauff booked her spot in the French Open quarterfinals for the second straight year. The 18-year-old impressed with a stunning backhand shot around the net post and defeated No. 31 seed Elise Mertens 6-4, 6-0 on Court Philippe Chatrier.
Gauff first captured global attention at Wimbledon at just 15, when she became the youngest qualifier in history and famously beat Venus Williams on her way to the fourth round. Her first Grand Slam quarterfinal came in Paris in 2021, where she fell to eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova.
Next, Gauff will face either 2017 U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens or Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann.
On the men’s side, world No. 1 Novak Djokovic advanced to a record 16th Roland Garros quarterfinal after dispatching Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman 6-1, 6-3, 6-3. Despite a brief 3-0 deficit in the second set, Djokovic stormed back to win seven straight games and maintain his flawless record in the tournament — having not dropped a single set so far.
The defending champion has now reached the French Open quarterfinals 13 consecutive years, winning titles in 2016 and 2021. With 20 Grand Slam trophies to his name, Djokovic could soon face his longtime rival Rafael Nadal, who holds a record
21 major titles.
