Camila Giorgi makes shock re-emergence in Italy after ‘fleeing over alleged tax evasion’

Former tennis star Camila Giorgi has made a surprising return to Italy after months of speculation about her sudden retirement and reports of alleged financial troubles. The 33-year-old, once ranked World No. 26 and a Wimbledon quarterfinalist, appeared at the Venice International Film Festival in a glittering white sequined dress, catching many off guard.

Giorgi retired quietly from tennis last year, shifting her focus to lingerie modeling. Her retirement was unusual, only becoming public when her name appeared on the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s list of retired players. At the same time, Italian media reported claims of tax evasion and unpaid rent on a villa in Florence—allegations she has firmly denied. She moved to the United States with her parents shortly after, fueling speculation she had “fled” the country.

Speaking recently on Italian talk show Verissimo, Giorgi dismissed the accusations with humor. She laughed at the idea of owing six months of rent and mocked claims she had taken furniture from the villa, clarifying that her family had purchased their own. She also rejected the suggestion that her relocation was an escape, saying: “It was not an escape. I moved to America permanently with my parents.”

Her lawyers previously stated she would return to Italy, and her appearance at the Venice Film Festival seems to confirm that. Giorgi insisted that the financial issues were not her doing but stemmed from poor management by a former lawyer. “We did not flee for tax reasons. I never fled, I never spoke,” she said.

Since retiring, Giorgi has dabbled in tennis media, interviewing players at tournaments, and she has also been open about her relationship with Argentine politician Ramiro Marra, whom she described as “love at first sight.”

On the court, Giorgi was known for her aggressive style and notable runs at major tournaments, including the 2018 Wimbledon quarterfinals and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic quarterfinals. Now, her unexpected reappearance in Italy has reignited public interest in both her personal life and her unresolved controversies.
