Chelsea and Matildas star Sam Kerr has spoken candidly about becoming a mum after she and her fiancée, Kristie Mewis, welcomed their first child earlier this year.
The couple revealed they were expecting in November 2024, with Mewis carrying the pregnancy. Their son, Jagger Mewis-Kerr, was born on May 8, and the pair joyfully announced his arrival on Instagram with the caption: “Our little man is here.”
Kerr has since returned to action following a long knee injury, marking her comeback with her 100th goal for Chelsea. Speaking with teammate Erin Cuthbert on the We Are Chelsea podcast, the striker admitted motherhood still feels surreal.
“Sometimes we just look at him and laugh, like, ‘Wait, he’s ours?’” Kerr said. “It still feels wild that the baby we saw in scans is now here with us forever.”
She described the joy of seeing Jagger’s excitement when she comes home, joking that parenting is like “having a dog times 100 – harder, but also so much better.” Still, she admitted the challenges: “You can’t just leave your baby in the backyard to entertain himself.”
When asked what she hopes her son might become, Kerr laughed: “A scientist or surgeon—something that makes heaps of money.”
Kerr’s recent return to the pitch has delighted Chelsea teammates, with goalkeeper Hannah Hampton joking: “It’s about time she starts annoying opposition goalkeepers—she already does it to me in training.”
Kerr and Mewis, who got engaged in September 2023, have been together since 2021. Mewis, a U.S. international with 53 caps, last played for West Ham in the WSL before stepping away from football after announcing her pregnancy.
