Chelsea coach Sonia Bompastor has shut down speculation over Sam Kerr’s future, confirming the Matildas captain remains part of the club’s plans. Kerr has not played since her ACL injury in January 2024 but remains under close recovery management.
Kerr’s surprise appearance at the A-League Women’s grand final in Melbourne raised eyebrows, especially as Chelsea competed in the FA Cup final the same day. Despite her absence, Chelsea capped an unbeaten domestic season with a 3-0 win over Manchester United.

Bompastor emphasized Kerr’s importance, calling her return the equivalent of a new signing. She expressed disappointment at not having Kerr available this season but remains confident in her comeback ahead of next season’s pre-season training.

Matildas interim coach Tom Sermanni confirmed Kerr is progressing well but isn’t ready to return yet. With rehab continuing under Chelsea’s guidance, her focus is on a full recovery in time for the 2025/26 season, rather than short-term national team appearances.
