Ellie Carpenter has officially joined English champions Chelsea on a four-year deal, reuniting with Matildas captain Sam Kerr. The 25-year-old defender arrives from Lyon, where she enjoyed a decorated five-year spell including two UEFA Champions League victories.
Carpenter also reunites with former Lyon coach Sonia Bompastor at Chelsea, aiming to build on the club’s dominance in English women’s football. Chelsea recently secured a sixth consecutive WSL title and added both the FA Cup and League Cup to their trophy haul.
Expressing her excitement, Carpenter said she’s proud to join one of the biggest clubs in the women’s game. She hopes to contribute to Chelsea’s ongoing success and is thrilled to work alongside Kerr and Bompastor again.
An accomplished talent, Carpenter debuted for the Matildas at 15 and played at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Her journey has taken her through the A-League, NWSL, and Europe. She is now signed to Chelsea until the end of the 2028–29 season.
