Emma Raducanu has reportedly caused controversy by violating a 150-year-old dress code at Wimbledon’s All England Club. The 2021 US Open champion allegedly ignored the strict all-white attire rule, which applies to both matches and practice sessions, angering club members.
Reports claim Raducanu has been practicing in non-regulation outfits, including a pink ensemble, sparking accusations of arrogance. The Daily Mail suggests her actions have upset members who believe she is disregarding tradition. Wimbledon’s dress code, established in the 1880s, mandates players wear “almost entirely white” attire, with only minimal colored trim allowed.
In 2023, a rule amendment permitted female players to wear dark undershorts for period-related concerns, but other restrictions remain. Off-white and cream are still banned, and strict limits apply to colored accents. Some members feel Raducanu’s disregard for these rules is unfair, questioning whether her status as a Grand Slam winner entitles her to special treatment.
Raducanu is not the first to challenge Wimbledon’s dress code. In 2022, Nick Kyrgios arrived in red Nike Jordans and a matching cap before changing into white. Even Roger Federer was once reprimanded for wearing orange-soled shoes, proving that no player is exempt from the club’s traditions.
