Jordan Spieth faced an unexpected setback at the Travelers Championship, withdrawing mid-round for the first time in his 297 PGA Tour starts. Sudden shoulder blade tightness made it impossible for the three-time major champion to continue play on Thursday.
Spieth struggled early, posting five-over through 12 holes before halting at the par-5 13th. Despite on-range treatment from his physio, the pain worsened, forcing him to exit the course via cart and consult with specialist Marnus Marais.
The injury emerged suddenly during warm-up, despite a promising gym session. “Everything was fine, then my scapula locked up,” Spieth explained. As the discomfort spread to his neck and back, playing through the pain became impossible.
Spieth, frustrated and confused, admitted he hadn’t changed his routine. “I’ve never withdrawn before. It’s unfortunate,” he said. “I’ve been doing everything right. It just felt random.” His condition will now be closely monitored ahead of upcoming events.
