‘Going to Cut Your Arms’ – Emma Raducanu’s Traumatic Dubai Ordeal Inspires 17YO WTA Pro to Share Her Own Horrifying Past

Emma Raducanu faced a distressing incident during her match against Karolina Muchova at the 2025 Dubai Tennis Championships. The British tennis star was visibly unsettled by a spectator’s inappropriate behavior, leading to a brief match suspension. This traumatic experience has now encouraged 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva to share her own harrowing past encounter with threats and harassment.

The unsettling moment occurred during the second-round match, where Raducanu sought refuge behind the umpire’s chair after noticing the disturbing actions of a man in the stands. Tournament officials quickly intervened, ejecting the individual. Despite this, Raducanu struggled to regain composure and ultimately lost the match in a closely fought battle, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4. The WTA later confirmed that the same individual had approached her earlier in the week and has since been banned from all future events pending further investigation.

Andreeva’s revelation sheds light on the persistent threats female players face. She recalled receiving a terrifying message at age 14, warning that someone would find her and harm her. Such incidents highlight the growing concern over player safety, an issue also acknowledged by former world No. 1 Iga Swiatek, who recounted her own close encounter with a fan during an event in Poland.

As Raducanu exits the Dubai Open, discussions surrounding player safety and the fairness of wildcard entries in the WTA continue. Despite a challenging season marked by injuries and early tournament exits, she remains optimistic about her future. With the WTA’s support and guidance from mentor Jane O’Donoghue, Raducanu looks ahead to reclaiming her form and making a strong comeback in 2025.
