J.J. Spaun Delivers Bogey-Free Masterclass to Seize Early US Open Lead
J.J. Spaun delivered a near-flawless opening round at Oakmont, shooting a bogey-free 4-under 66. The 34-year-old became the only morning player to finish without a bogey, leading the U.S. Open in just his second appearance.
Spaun’s round began with a chip-in birdie from 20 feet on the 10th hole. He then birdied three more holes over his first nine, carding a record-setting 31 for the front nine—a U.S. Open best.
With only 26 putts for the round, Spaun credited key par saves for keeping momentum. He called it one of his best putting performances this season and emphasized the importance of grinding through tough U.S. Open conditions.
Ranked 25th in the world, Spaun has already logged two runner-up finishes in 2025. Fresh off a playoff loss to Rory McIlroy at The Players, he’s riding a career-best year and now aims to convert that form into major success.
