Andy Murray’s ‘Quiet’ Father William Has Been Just as Influential as Judy in His Career
While Judy Murray has long been in the public eye as the driving force behind Andy and Jamie Murray’s tennis success, the brothers’ father, William Murray, has played an equally crucial but far more understated role.
Jamie Murray revealed in 2019 that their dad, often described as “quiet,” was deeply involved in their upbringing and tennis journey. Unlike Judy, who is frequently seen courtside, William preferred to remain in the background. Yet, he handled much of the practical support — from driving them to tournaments to washing and ironing their kit when they were young.
Born in Dunblane, William worked as a regional manager for the Scottish newsagent chain RS McColl. He married Judy Erskine in 1980, and the couple had Jamie in 1986 and Andy a year later. After separating for nine years, the couple divorced in 2005. William later remarried, tying the knot with Sam Watson in 2016 at Andy’s Cromlix House hotel.
Andy has spoken candidly about the challenges of growing up with divorced parents, admitting that he often felt caught between them. Despite this, both William and Judy remained devoted to their sons, with William describing how difficult it was to tell his children about the separation.
Although he has kept a low profile, William’s influence has been undeniable. Jamie summed it up best, saying: “Mum’s in the public eye… but Dad was there for us just as much.”
