Sam Kerr has undergone a second, undisclosed surgery amid her ACL recovery, according to new Matildas head coach Joe Montemurro. The procedure was reportedly unrelated to her knee injury, which she sustained in January 2024 while training with Chelsea.
Montemurro confirmed the news during a recent interview, stating that he had only been briefed on the situation within the past 24 hours. He clarified that Kerr is now back to running, indicating progress in her overall recovery.
Despite the setback, Montemurro expressed optimism about Kerr’s condition, emphasizing that her knee is “fine” and the latest operation addressed a separate issue. He continues to monitor her recovery closely.
Montemurro, appointed this week, will lead Australia in upcoming friendlies against Slovenia. As the team looks ahead to the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, he called his new role “the honor of a lifetime.”
