Lindsey Vonn returned to competitive skiing in epic fashion, finishing second in the Super-G at the World Cup Finals in Sun Valley, Idaho. It was her first podium since retiring in 2019—and it came before a home crowd.
“I mean, it honestly couldn’t be a better way to end the season,” said Vonn in an emotional interview with Team USA.
“I’m so excited for next year and for Cortina. Now, I think it just solidifies the fact that I can compete for a medal. I might be older, but I’m not done yet.”
Vonn Proves Critics Wrong with Strong Comeback
Vonn’s return to form didn’t come without challenges. After a knee replacement surgery in April 2024, she returned to the snow during the FIS Fall Festival in Colorado. Many doubted her ability to compete again—especially at 40.
“It’s been a rough season of people saying that I can’t, that I’m too old, that I’m not good enough anymore,” Vonn told NBC Sports.
“I think I proved everyone wrong.”
Vonn’s Determination and Drive Remain Unshaken
Despite the noise, Vonn stayed focused. Her competitive fire hasn’t dimmed. Her performance in Sun Valley—just 1.29 seconds behind Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami—signals she’s still a force on the slopes.
“I usually do better when the pressure’s higher,” she said.
“It’s the last race of the season. I just put it all on the line. This is the level that I know I can ski. I know I can even do better than that.”
“Today meant everything to me. This is the road now to Cortina next year.”
What’s Next for Lindsey Vonn?
With 82 World Cup wins and three Olympic medals, including gold, Vonn is one of skiing’s greatest athletes. Her latest result brings her career podium total to 138—tied for third-most in history.
Fans can now look forward to the 2026 Winter Olympics in Cortina d’Ampezzo, where Vonn has her sights set on one more piece of glory.
