Five years after bidding farewell to professional tennis, Maria Sharapova has been officially inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. The honor set the stage for a memorable start to the 2025 US Open. But that’s not the only reason fans will see the Russian star back at Flushing Meadows this year. At 38, Sharapova won’t be returning to compete but rather to step onto center court and receive a special US Open ring.
True to her reputation as a trailblazer in tennis and fashion, Sharapova plans to make the moment unforgettable. She revealed she’ll be wearing a modern version of the iconic black Givenchy dress she debuted during her 2006 US Open victory—a design originally inspired by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. That dress, embellished with Swarovski crystals, was the first evening gown worn by a female player on court. Her updated look will feature a sleeveless cut, crystal accents around the neckline, and an elegant ankle-length finish.
Serena Williams, while welcoming Sharapova into the Hall of Fame, praised her influence beyond the baseline, noting how she turned on-court excellence into a powerful brand in business, fashion, and beyond. Williams remarked, “She showed us that you can be fierce on the court and strategic off it—unapologetically herself every step of the way.”
Sharapova, reflecting on her journey, used the spotlight to inspire future athletes. “When voices tell you to ease up or dull your ambition, I hope you ignore them. Compete fiercely. Raise your standards. Set goals that scare you—and celebrate every victory, big or small,” she advised.
Her return also highlighted a touching chapter in the once-intense rivalry between her and Serena Williams. Over the years, their competitive fire evolved into mutual respect and even friendship. Williams admitted Sharapova was one of the few players who pushed her to train harder every time they met. Sharapova, in turn, expressed gratitude, saying their rivalry brought out the best in her because both hated losing more than anything.
While their bond is now celebrated, all eyes at this year’s US Open will be on Sharapova’s stunning tribute dress—a symbol of her legacy as both a champion and a fashion icon.
