Matildas captain Sam Kerr is set to end a challenging year on a high, with fresh details emerging about her New Year’s Eve wedding to fiancée Kristie Mewis in Perth.

The football stars, who welcomed their son Jagger earlier this year, will exchange vows in Kerr’s hometown as 2025 comes to a close. The celebration has already been dubbed by fans as Australia’s answer to a royal wedding, though the couple are keeping the finer details tightly guarded.

While the exact address has not been revealed, Mewis confirmed the ceremony will take place at a private residence in Perth. She described the home as “beautiful,” noting that it has undergone major renovations since they first viewed it nearly two years ago.

Speaking on the Mewis Squared podcast the American international explained that the couple’s long engagement allowed them to carefully plan their ideal day.

“We’ve been engaged for a long time—by the time we get married it’ll be about two and a half years,” she said. “The venue has changed so much since we first saw it, and now it’s absolutely perfect.

More than 100 guests are expected to attend, a number that has left Mewis feeling slightly overwhelmed. While she acknowledged that many weddings are much larger, she admitted the thought of connecting with so many people in one night has been stressful, worrying she won’t have enough time for everyone.

One of the most emotional moments of the day will involve their seven-month-old son. Although Jagger is too young to have an official role, Kerr will walk down the aisle holding him—a moment Mewis says will be impossible to watch without tears. Jagger is expected to wear a matching outfit alongside his mothers, completing the family look.

The couple have also revealed they will both wear suits for the ceremony, with their son dressed in a miniature version to match.

The only lingering concern is the West Australian summer heat, with the wedding scheduled during one of Perth’s hottest periods. Mewis joked that the Australian climate will be far more intense than what she’s used to back home in Boston.

Kerr and Mewis first crossed paths as international rivals, representing Australia and the United States, before quietly beginning their relationship in 2019. Public attention grew during the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, when their post-match interactions sparked widespread interest.

Their journey together has included long-distance challenges, injuries, and high-profile moments, including Kerr’s legal case in the UK and her recovery from a serious ACL injury. Through it all, Mewis remained a steady presence by her side.
