Matildas veteran backs Sam Kerr to resume as captain on return to playing

Matildas vice-captain Emily van Egmond has voiced strong support for Sam Kerr’s return as team captain, emphasizing she should not relinquish the armband. Kerr recently rejoined the national squad following a long injury layoff.

Football Australia chose not to sanction Kerr after a London incident in 2023. The striker expressed regret over her actions, and was later found not guilty of racially aggravated harassment during a February court ruling.

Van Egmond praised Kerr’s positive influence and presence during the current Matildas camp. Although Kerr won’t play against South Korea, her return in upcoming matches against Argentina remains a strong possibility.

The Matildas are aiming to bounce back from a poor SheBelieves Cup showing. With midfielder Katrina Gorry sidelined and the Asian Cup fast approaching, Friday’s friendly offers a crucial step toward rebuilding form and momentum.
