“Me disappeared? That’s what they said” – Camila Giorgi clears the air on sudden retirement and tax scandal rumors

Camila Giorgi’s unexpected retirement and the swirl of tax evasion reports earlier this year stirred plenty of speculation in the tennis world. While she later confirmed her retirement on social media, Giorgi stayed silent about the rumors — until now.

In a recent chat with Italy’s Canale 5, the former World No. 26 dismissed claims about her sudden disappearance, insisting that the narrative was completely fabricated.

“Me, suddenly disappeared? That’s just the version they told,” Giorgi clarified. “I didn’t disappear. I was supposed to announce my retirement in Paris, but it was leaked on the anti-doping website, and everything went public before I could say anything.”

The 32-year-old, who last played professionally at the Miami Open in March, also addressed the controversy surrounding alleged tax irregularities. Giorgi explained that her family had no knowledge of the issue, blaming the financial managers overseeing her affairs at the time.

“My family wasn’t aware of the situation — the problems came from the people who managed me,” she said. “When I signed my retirement papers, things got chaotic. We’ve since replaced the people handling my finances, and now everything is fine. I’m only sorry my father was blamed — he didn’t deserve that.”

Giorgi added that although she dislikes the word “victim,” her family truly was one in this case.

The Italian also reflected on her decision to step away from tennis, revealing that the demanding travel schedule had taken its toll long before she officially retired.

“I’ve wanted to quit for years,” Giorgi admitted. “Life on Tour is tough. I kept delaying it, but in May, I woke up one morning and decided it was time. I told my father, and he was happy — he’s always supported me. He’s not the controlling person people think he is; we’ve always had a great relationship.”

Although Giorgi has retired from professional tennis, she still plays casually for fun. Over a 15-year career, she captured four WTA titles, including a memorable victory at the 2021 Canadian Open, and climbed as high as No. 26 in the world rankings.
