New Matildas coach Joe Montemurro has shared a heartfelt update on Sam Kerr, revealing she recently underwent another surgery for a separate injury. While details remain private, the Aussie star returned home to Australia for the unexpected procedure.
Kerr has been out of action since tearing her ACL in 2024, a devastating blow that halted her incredible career momentum. Though she’d begun training again earlier this year, fresh complications led to more medical care. Thankfully, her knee is now said to be doing much better.

Away from the pitch, Kerr’s life has also seen joyful changes. She recently celebrated the birth of her son, Jagger, with fiancée Kristie Mewis. Montemurro says any decision on her Matildas captaincy will wait until she’s fully ready to return.

He also offered reassurance about rising star Mary Fowler, who’s recovering from her own ACL injury. With support from Manchester City, Montemurro is confident she’ll be back in time for the 2026 Women’s Asian Cup, calling her a truly special player.
