“Nobody could understand why Venus Williams was out there” – Ex-WTA pro hails American legend for continuing to play at 45 after US Open exit

At 45, Venus Williams returned to compete in the 2025 US Open, where she lost a spirited first-round match to Karolína Muchová. Despite the early exit, her decision to continue playing has been praised by former world No. 6 Chanda Rubin.

Williams had recently played the 2025 Mubadala Citi DC Open, where she became the oldest player to win a WTA singles match after defeating Peyton Stearns. She also made the doubles quarterfinals with partner Hailey Baptiste, showcasing her continued competitiveness.

Rubin, now a Tennis Channel analyst, reflected on Williams’ journey, noting how injuries made her comeback deeply personal. She said many questioned why Venus still played despite her decorated career, but admired her passion and ability to enjoy the sport on her own terms.

Beyond the court, Williams was honored by Mattel with a signature Barbie doll, modeled after her 2007 Wimbledon triumph. The collectible captures her iconic white dress and accessories, a fitting tribute to a champion whose impact extends far beyond tennis.
