Venus Williams has opened up about the years of speculation surrounding her relationship with sister and fellow tennis legend, Serena Williams. The seven-time Grand Slam champion revealed that fans have often questioned the authenticity of their close bond due to their many on-court battles.
“People Thought We Were Faking It”
Reflecting on their unique rivalry, Venus explained how people often wondered how they could compete fiercely against each other and still remain so close. “There’s been kind of a fascination about Serena and I, right? Because we played each other so many times and people were like: ‘Do they really like each other? They’re just faking it,’”Venus said with a laugh. She added that the sisters are now eager to share more of their real personalities with the world.
A Long-Awaited Return to the Court
While Serena retired from professional tennis in 2022, Venus recently returned to competition after a 16-month break, participating in the Citi Open. Though her run ended in the second round, her comeback has sparked excitement ahead of her appearance at the Cincinnati Open this August.
A New Podcast Venture
This summer, Venus and Serena are launching a joint podcast on X Originals, co-produced by Serena’s Nine Two Six Productions. The project will give fans a deeper look into their lives, personal stories, and perspectives beyond the tennis court. “We’re excited to connect with audiences, old and new, in a way we’ve never done before,” they shared.
