Police officer at the centre of Sam Kerr’s racial harassment trial is challenged by the Matildas star’s lawyers over a key case point

Sam Kerr’s legal team has challenged PC Stephen Lovell’s account in court, arguing he exaggerated his distress to justify a criminal charge. The Chelsea striker is on trial for racially aggravated abuse following an incident at Twickenham Station in January 2023.

The court heard that Kerr and her fiancée, Kristie Mewis, had an altercation with a taxi driver after a night out. Kerr claimed she vomited out of the window, leading the driver to become aggressive. Fearing danger, they broke the taxi’s rear window before police intervened.

During her interaction with PC Lovell at Twickenham Police Station, Kerr called him “stupid” and “white.” Initially, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) deemed the evidence insufficient for charges. However, Lovell provided a second statement months later, leading to Kerr’s prosecution.

Kerr’s barrister, Grace Forbes, questioned Lovell’s motives, suggesting he pursued the case due to feeling belittled. Lovell denied these claims, stating he was committed to ensuring justice. The trial continues as Kerr maintains her innocence against the racially aggravated harassment charges.
