Matildas superstar Sam Kerr has left fans stunned by unexpectedly rejoining Australia’s national team training in Perth. The striker made the announcement subtly on Instagram, sharing images from the Sam Kerr Football Centre.
Despite not being named in the Matildas’ 33-player squad for the upcoming friendlies, Kerr’s quiet presence at training marks her first significant return since a long-standing knee injury sidelined her in January 2024.
The 31-year-old ruptured her ACL during a Chelsea training camp, and her recovery has been filled with uncertainty. Reports revealed she recently underwent a second surgery for a mystery injury, kept hidden from the public.
Kerr’s return to Australia for treatment sparked speculation, especially after her appearance at the A-League Women’s final and her holiday in Mallorca with fiancée Kristie Mewis and their newborn son Jagger.
Coach Joe Montemurro, now leading the Matildas, admitted her return complicates decisions about her captaincy. However, he confirmed Kerr has resumed running and training on grass, though she’s still not ready for match play.
With four crucial matches ahead, Montemurro is reshaping the squad’s playing style. Midfielder Clare Wheeler praised the new coach’s approach, expressing excitement about the increased focus on ball control and tactical freedom.
