Chelsea edge Aston Villa as Kerr returns
Sam Kerr made a memorable return for Chelsea, scoring in the 93rd minute to secure a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park. The Australian forward, coming off the bench, tapped in the Blues’ third goal, marking her first league appearance in 634 days following an ACL injury.
Chelsea took an early lead through Aggie Beever-Jones’ header in the 22nd minute, but Villa fought back with Ebony Salmon curling in a superb equaliser from distance. Villa had further chances, including a one-on-one with England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, who kept them at bay. Chelsea regained control when Niamh Charles’ long-range effort deflected off Missy-Bo Kearns past Ellie Roebuck, making her Aston Villa debut. Kerr’s late goal ensured Chelsea started the season with two wins, while Villa are still seeking their first victory.
Manchester United storm to top with emphatic London City win
Manchester United delivered a dominant performance against newly promoted London City Lionesses, cruising to a 5-1 win. Melvine Malard stole the show with two quick goals shortly after halftime, while Maya Le Tissier had opened the scoring with a penalty in the third minute. Jayde Riviere added a second for United before Malard’s double sealed the win. Liverpool falter against 10-player Leicester
Leicester City, down to ten players, claimed their first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Liverpool at the King Power Stadium. Emily van Egmond’s second-half header secured the points after Shannon O’Brien was sent off just minutes earlier. Despite dominating possession and taking seven shots, Liverpool struggled to break down Leicester’s resilient defence, leaving them winless after two matches for the first time in six years.
Spurs spoil Everton’s Goodison Park debut
Tottenham impressed at Goodison Park, defeating Everton 2-0 with a stunning long-range strike from Cathinka Tandberg. Olga Ahtinen had earlier given Spurs the lead in the first half, assisted by Tandberg on her full debut. Spurs remain unbeaten with two wins, while Everton couldn’t build on the excitement of their first game at their new home, remaining in fifth place.
