Sam Kerr struck what she described as her “favourite type of goal” as Chelsea produced a landmark 2–1 win away to Wolfsburg, sealing qualification for the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-finals.
Knowing that victory at the AOK Stadion would guarantee a place in the last eight, Chelsea faced a tough task against a Wolfsburg side that had never lost at home to an English club. That challenge grew even steeper when Alexandra Popp fired the hosts ahead with a powerful half-volley in the 16th minute.
However, Sonia Bompastor’s team showed the resilience that has become a trademark of Chelsea in recent seasons. The Blues drew level just before half-time when Lucy Bronze climbed highest to nod home from a corner. Chelsea continued to apply pressure after the break, and it finally paid off shortly after the hour mark when Kerr met Johanna Rytting Kaneryd’s cross with a perfectly placed header that flew into the top corner.
Wolfsburg pushed hard for an equaliser late on and created several chances, but Chelsea held firm to secure a historic victory and confirm their place in the quarter-finals.
Reflecting after the match, Kerr admitted Chelsea were tested. She said Wolfsburg were a strong side and that the game required real determination, with the focus firmly on finishing in the top four and getting the result. The Australian striker added that she was delighted to score, noting it had been a while since she last found the net with a header. She described headed goals as her favourite and said every Champions League goal carries special meaning.
Kerr also revealed her pride after learning Chelsea were the first English team to win at Wolfsburg, calling it another surprise on a night full of them. By finishing in the top four, Chelsea have avoided a two-legged play-off round, reducing their workload in an already demanding schedule.
