Sam Kerr trial: Jury in court case of Chelsea striker retires to consider verdict

Chelsea Women’s striker Sam Kerr is on trial for racially aggravated harassment following an incident in January 2023. The 31-year-old Australian international allegedly used offensive language toward a police officer after a dispute with a taxi driver in south-west London.

The prosecution claims Kerr and her partner, Kristie Mewis, refused to pay cleaning costs after one of them was sick in a taxi. The situation escalated when the vehicle’s rear window was smashed. Kerr allegedly insulted PC Stephen Lovell at Twickenham Police Station, calling him “f****** stupid and white.”

During the trial, Kerr denied the allegations, arguing she was reacting to perceived power and privilege. She stated she “feared for her life” while trapped in the taxi and insisted her words were not racially motivated. The taxi driver, central to the dispute, has not testified or been identified.

Footage from PC Lovell’s body-worn camera captured Kerr’s remarks, which she later admitted but claimed were made under distress. The defense argued the police overlooked the taxi driver’s actions, raising questions about fairness. The jury has now retired to consider its verdict.
