Sonia Bompastor hails Chelsea’s pull power as Sam Kerr edges closer to return.
Chelsea Women head coach Sonia Bompastor has highlighted the club’s growing reputation as a destination for the world’s top talent, while also giving an update on Sam Kerr’s long-awaited comeback.
Speaking at Cobham ahead of Sunday’s Women’s Super League clash with Aston Villa, Bompastor reflected on Chelsea’s strong start to the season and the ambition that continues to drive the club forward.
The Blues opened their campaign with a statement 2–1 win over title rivals Manchester City at Stamford Bridge, a result that extended their unbeaten league run to May 2024. While Bompastor has played a key role in that consistency, she was quick to praise her squad for its blend of experience, energy and quality.
Despite the strength already in place, Chelsea remain eager to improve. That mindset was underlined on transfer deadline day with the arrival of exciting United States international Alyssa Thompson.
Bompastor acknowledged the increasing competition in women’s football, both in England and across Europe, but believes Chelsea’s ability to attract elite players speaks volumes about the club’s vision.
“The level of competition is huge now,” she said. “For a club to bring in the best players, it shows ambition and sends a strong message about the future. We are clear about what we want to achieve, and having quality and depth in the squad is essential.”
The Chelsea boss also touched on Sam Kerr’s situation, with the striker continuing her recovery after more than 18 months out due to a knee injury. Kerr was an unused substitute against Manchester City and is still awaiting her official return to action.
