Grigor Dimitrov found himself in an amusingly awkward moment during a fan interaction at the Miami Open.
As part of a social media event, the 33-year-old Bulgarian joined two fans on a cable car ride above Hard Rock Stadium. During the chat, the women asked Dimitrov which player on tour he would most like to marry. Caught off guard, the former world No.3 laughed nervously and said he wasn’t ready for marriage.

Trying to shift the conversation, Dimitrov asked the fans who they thought would be a good dinner date for him. One of them replied: “My favourite player is Maria Sharapova, so maybe…” To which Dimitrov quickly revealed: “She was actually my ex-girlfriend.”
Realizing the slip, the fan apologized with a shy “Sorry to bring that up,” but Dimitrov brushed it off with a smile, assuring them he and Sharapova were still on great terms. He even called her “a great pick.”

Dimitrov and Sharapova dated between 2012 and 2015 before parting ways. He later entered a relationship with Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger, which lasted until 2019. Sharapova, meanwhile, retired in 2020 and has since built a life with British businessman Alexander Gilkes, with whom she shares a son.

On the court, Dimitrov is enjoying an impressive run in Miami, defeating Federico Cina, Karen Khachanov, Brandon Nakashima, and Francisco Cerundolo to reach the semi-finals. Despite nearly collapsing from the heat after his last match, he is set to face Novak Djokovic for a spot in the final.
