Former Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova once worried about finding a partner tall enough to match her 6ft 2in frame. That concern disappeared when she fell in love with Los Angeles Lakers guard Sasha Vujacic, who stands at 6ft 7in.
The Russian tennis star, then 23, announced her engagement to the Slovenian-born athlete after he proposed at his Manhattan Beach home in California. Vujacic, 26, reportedly got down on one knee in the romantic moment.
The couple had been together for nearly a year at the time, making their relationship public in November when they were spotted cozying up at a U2 concert in Los Angeles. That summer, Sharapova even invited him to train with her at the IMG Academy in Florida.
Sharapova, who became a global sensation after winning Wimbledon in 2004, has been ranked world No. 1 four times and was once voted the most glamorous woman on the tennis circuit. She also secured one of the most lucrative deals in women’s sports—a groundbreaking eight-year Nike contract worth more than £65 million.
