Former tennis star Camila Giorgi, who left the sport last year to pursue a career as a lingerie model, has made an unexpected return to the tennis world—this time as a reporter.
The 33-year-old Italian quietly stepped away from professional tennis in May without a formal announcement, though her name later appeared on the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s list of retired players. Her exit coincided with swirling rumors about unpaid rent, tax issues, and her sudden disappearance from the Women’s Tennis Association’s radar.
Now, just nine months later, Giorgi has resurfaced at the Argentine Open in Buenos Aires, interviewing players at the ATP 250 event. The move marks a surprising twist for the former Wimbledon quarterfinalist, who once reached a career-high ranking of No. 26.
Her retirement was mired in controversy. Reports claimed she fled Italy for the United States, with her former landlord accusing her of failing to pay rent and even removing furniture from a villa near Florence—allegations Giorgi firmly denies. She later clarified in a TV interview that she split her time between Italy and Miami, insisting she hadn’t “disappeared” but simply preferred to keep her personal life private.
Legal troubles have also followed the former star. Giorgi faces an investigation over allegedly using a fake Covid-19 vaccination certificate to compete in the 2022 Australian Open, accusations she and her father have strongly rejected. Her lawyer has indicated she will request a shortened trial, maintaining her innocence.
Despite the off-court turbulence, Giorgi’s achievements on the court remain notable. She captured four WTA titles during her career, with her biggest breakthrough coming at Wimbledon 2018, where she reached the last eight.
Now with a microphone in hand instead of a racquet, Giorgi’s career takes a fresh turn, as she settles into her new chapter in tennis media.
