Jordan Spieth was overheard on a hot mic expressing frustration during the first round of the Memorial Tournament. While discussing a tough lie with caddie Michael Greller, Spieth remarked, “They’re getting absolutely boned,” referring to his unlucky breaks.
The exchange occurred after Spieth’s tee shot on the par-5 fifth hole hit a tree and kicked backward. Greller advised a safe shot, but Spieth chose to be aggressive. Trusting his instincts, he reached the fairway and ultimately carded a birdie on the hole.
Spieth’s round included four birdies and four bogeys, finishing at even-par 72. Despite some setbacks, he remained competitive, tied for 14th and seven strokes behind leader Ben Griffin at Muirfield Village.
He is paired with Xander Schauffele for the second round, scheduled to tee off Friday afternoon. Spieth will look to close the gap as Griffin leads by two over Collin Morikawa, with Max Homa sitting in third.
