Why Camila Giorgi silently walked away after name appears on ITIA’s retired players list

Camila Giorgi has stepped away from professional tennis in her own understated way—without making a public announcement.

The 32-year-old Italian’s name was officially added to the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s retired players list on Tuesday. Ranked No. 116 at the time, she hadn’t signed up for Roland Garros, sparking speculation before her retirement became clear. Giorgi has yet to comment publicly or post about the decision on her social media.

Her last tournament was the Miami Open, where she managed to take two games from world No. 1 Iga Swiatek before falling in the second round. Giorgi competed in five events in 2024, finishing with a 3-5 record.

If she ever decides to return, ITIA rules mean she would still be subject to out-of-competition testing for at least six months.

Giorgi, from Macerata, enjoyed a solid career with four WTA titles. She claimed her first in 2015 at Rosmalen and her biggest at the 2021 Montreal Masters, where she upset Karolina Pliskova in the final. Her highest ranking came in October 2018, when she reached No. 26.

On the Grand Slam stage, her standout performance was a quarterfinal appearance at Wimbledon in 2018. She also made it to the fourth round of the US Open in 2013 and Roland Garros in 2022, along with five third-round finishes at the Australian Open.
