Justin Thomas, the 2017 PGA Champion at Quail Hollow, failed to make the cut this year, finishing 3-over par. Despite a recent win at the RBC Heritage, a late-round stumble ended his 2025 championship hopes early in Charlotte.
Jordan Spieth also missed the cut by a single stroke, falling short in his attempt to complete the career Grand Slam. His second-round 68 wasn’t enough to overcome an opening 76. Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka met similar fates, both exiting early.
Meanwhile, defending champion Xander Schauffele narrowly advanced, continuing his PGA Tour-best made cut streak. Rory McIlroy, using a backup driver, also survived the cut at 1-over despite early struggles off the tee.
Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson finished well outside the cut line. Mickelson carded a 9-over total, while Johnson struggled to a 12-over finish. Former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama also missed the cut, ending a 19-major streak.
