Lexi Thompson, a semi-retired LPGA star, is competing in this week’s LPGA Founders Cup despite stepping away from full-time play after the 2024 season. The 11-time LPGA winner qualified for the event by finishing 50th in the 2024 CME points rankings.
Thompson emphasized her decision was driven by a desire to honor the LPGA’s 13 founders during the tour’s 75th anniversary. She expressed gratitude for the opportunities they created, adding that the event’s location in Bradenton, Florida—just three hours from her home—made participation convenient.
Although Thompson has reduced her schedule, she confirmed plans to play select events in 2025. She first won on tour in 2011 at age 16 and remains committed to the game. Fellow semi-retired major champion Brittany Lincicome is also competing this week on a sponsor’s exemption.
Lincicome, who stepped back from full-time competition in 2024, plans to play the Chevron Championship and possibly another event this summer. Despite cutting back on tournaments, she admitted she always intended to return, proving that the passion for golf never truly fades.
